Wood scores winner in double OT for Matrix

CORNWALL – If the opening game of the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League semifinal series between the Mid-Isle Matrix and Sherwood Falcons is any indication, fans are going to be in for a treat.

Alex Wood scored at 17:07 of the second overtime period to give the Matrix a 4-3 win at the APM Centre on Saturday night. Game 2 will also be played at the APM Centre on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., before the Falcons host Games 3 and, if necessary, Game 4 at the Cody Banks Arena on Thursday (8:20 p.m.) and Sunday, March 6 (5:30 p.m.).

Drew Grady, Matt Dickieson and Jacob Stewart scored in regulation time for the Matrix, who overcame a 2-0 first-period deficit. Brennon Jarvis (2), James Murphy, Zach Kennific, Easton Smith and Kurtis Green picked up assists.

For the Falcons, Joel Doran (1-1), Tanner MacLean and Tanner Lund found the back of the net.

The Falcons led 2-1 after the opening period, and Stewart’s power-play goal with three seconds remaining in the second period tied the game 3-3.

Goaltenders were Sean MacPhee (Matrix) and Ethan Malcom (Falcons). Jesse McCabe, Dylan MacDonald, Jack Connell and Brandon Smyth chipped in with helpers.
