KENSINGTON – The Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild and Charlottetown Mark’s Work Wearhouse Islanders will become very familiar with each other over the next week.
The teams are set to open the best-of-seven P.E.I. major midget hockey championship series at Community Gardens in Kensington on Saturday night. With the first four games of the series scheduled over a six-day period, neither team can afford a slow start.
“Momentum is huge (in the playoffs),” said Wild head coach Mark Carragher. “We can’t get too high or too low.
“We know there are going to be highs and lows in the playoffs. We have to stay even keel and hopefully we stick to the process, stick to our game plan and things will happen.”
Islanders head coach Jeff MacDonald added, “For us, if we can get our four lines going and try to use our bench as much as possible, it will definitely help us as the series moves forward.”
With such a compact schedule, Wild forward Sam Jay said “focus” and proper preparation will be two keys.
“We have to be well rested and be prepared mentally and physically,” added Jay, who is from South Freetown.
Another key, added Wild defenceman Bailey Webster, will be discipline, especially with so many games against the same team in such a short period of time.
“For us, if we can get our four lines going and try to use our bench as much as possible, it will definitely help us as the series moves forward.” Charlottetown Islanders head coach Jeff MacDonald
“They (Islanders) capitalize on their power plays,” said Webster, who is from Kelvin Grove, near Kensington. “We just have to get the puck in deep and work hard.”
