Brad Kennedy scored twice on the power play Friday to lead the Charlottetown Islanders to a 5-4 victory over the Moncton Wildcats in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.
Spenser Cobbold had a goal and two assists while Troy Vance and Daniel Sprong each had a goal and a helper. Anthony Cortese added an assist in front of 5,789 fans at the Moncton Coliseum.
The Islanders improved to 19-36-2-4 while the Wildcats fall to 30-29-0-3.
“We’re in a push for the playoffs right now,” coach Gordie Dwyer said after the game.
“Our guys understand where we are in the standings and how critical the points are. It was a good road win for us.”
He added it was a physical game and a “gutsy win for us.”
Stephan Seeger, Mark Simpson, Vladimir Tkachev and former Summerside Western Capitals forward Christopher Caissy scored for Moncton.
The host Wildcats led 2-1 after the first when they outshot the Islanders 15-4. The visitors turned the tables on Moncton in the second scoring four goals to take a 5-3 lead to the third.
“We did a good job of shutting down their top guys,” Dwyer said.
Mason McDonald made 36 saves for the win while Jason Rioux made 19 saves in the loss. Capitals goalie Alex Kelly backed up Rioux.
Charlottetown travels to northern New Brunswick today to play the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at 7 p.m. in a key game. Both teams are among five squads battling for the final three playoffs spots.
“Everybody is conscious of where we are in the standings and who were playing against,” Dwyer said. “Our guys will be ready to go tomorrow.”
McDonald gets his first start in Bathurst since being traded to Charlottetown on Dec. 29. The Titan lost 6-0 to Halifax on Friday.

– Former P.E.I. Rocket Louick Marcotte had a goal and two assists in Val-d’Or’s 5-0 win over Gatineau.
Defenceman Ryan Graves had an assist and goalie Antoine Bibeau made 32 saves for the shutout. Both were traded by the Islanders at the deadline.
– Former Islanders forward Yan-Pavel Laplante had an assist in Victoriaville’s 7-1 win over Chicoutimi.
– Summerside’s Ryan MacKinnon had an assist in Rimouski’s 3-1 victory over Rouyn-Noranda.
