Hurricanes overcome four-goal deficit vs. Red Wings in regular-season finale

ABRAM-VILLAGE – The regular season has come to a close in the Island Junior Hockey League.

The Holland College Hurricanes outscored the Arsenault Fish Mart Western Red Wings 6-4 in the regular-season finale on Thursday night.

The game was a preview of the best-of-five quarter-final series after the Sherwood A&S Scrap Metal Falcons clinched third place on Wednesday night with a 5-2 win over the Hurricanes.

The fourth-place Red Wings will hold home-ice advantage over the fifth-place Hurricanes in a series that is expected to start early next week.

The Red Wings completed the regular season at 12-18-2 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses), and the Hurricanes were 9-20-3.

The Falcons completed the 32-game regular season at 11-15-6.

At the Evangeline Recreation Centre, Patrick Cummiskey (2-1), Logan Toole (1-2), Jonny Richards (1-2), Dalton MacDonald (1-1) and Eric Locke scored for the Hurricanes, who trailed 4-0 after the first period and answered back to tie the score 4-4 after 40 minutes.

Colton Gallant, Jeremy Balderston, Daniel Muise and Brandon Carter lit the lamp for the Red Wings.

Matt Derry earned the goaltending win.

Falcons 5 Hurricanes 2

At the Cody Banks Arena, Trevor MacKinnon (2-1), Brandon Birt (1-2), Lucas Holmes and Brady Cook scored for the Falcons. Josh Scott added three assists.

Nick MacDonald and Dalton MacDonald replied for the Hurricanes.

After a scoreless first period, the Falcons took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.

Winning goaltender was Daniel Nicholson.
