Vipers close out regular season with back-to-back shootout losses

KENSINGTON – The good news for the Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers is there are no shootouts in the Island Junior Hockey League playoffs.

The first-place Vipers concluded the regular season with back-to-back shootout losses over the weekend on home ice at Community Gardens. The Holland College Hurricanes edged the Vipers 4-3 on Sunday evening, and the Montague Maniacs pulled out a 7-6 win on Saturday night.

The Vipers concluded the regular season with a record of 25-5-2 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses).

Eric Locke scored the winning goal in the ninth round of the shootout, and Hurricanes goaltender Matt Derry stopped 52 shots through regulation time and overtime.

Pat Cummiskey (2) and Jonny Richards scored for the Hurricanes (8-19-0-3).

Adam Wight (2) and Brett Hogan replied for the Vipers.

The first period ended in a 1-1 tie, and the Hurricanes led 2-1 after the second.

Dylan McQuaid faced 29 shot in the Kensington goal.
