Gallant’s late goal lifts Caps in series opener

SUMMERSIDE – Chasse Gallant scored at 19:32 of the third period to lift the Summerside Hemphill GM Capitals to a winning start in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League playoffs.

Gallant’s goal gave the Capitals a 4-3 win over the Charlottetown Abbies. Game 2 in the best-of-five quarter-final series will be played at Simmons Sport Centre in Charlottetown on Saturday at 1:35 p.m., with Game 3 back at Credit Union Place in Summerside on Sunday at 7:10 p.m.

At Eastlink Arena, the Capitals led 3-1 after the first and second periods.

Owen Arsenault, Brandon Arsenault and Brady Albert also scored for the Capitals.

Will Murphy, Kyle Doucette and Seb Burns netted the Charlottetown goals.

Winning goaltender was Blake Arsenault, and Zach Geldert tended goal for the Abbies.

Referee Jonny Martin called five minors and one 10-minute misconduct against the Abbies. The Capitals received two minors.
