In opening game of AUS women's hockey quarter-final series


MONCTON, N.B. – Natacha Bergeron was hero for Moncton on Tuesday night.

Bergeron, who was set up by Elisa Savoie, scored at 19:32 of the second overtime period to give Moncton a 2-1 win over the UPEI Panthers in Game 1 of the best-of-three quarter-final series.

The Panthers will host Game 2 at MacLauchlan Arena on the UPEI campus on Friday at 7 p.m.

Before 389 fans at the J. Louis Levesque Arena, Jessie Howard opened the game’s scoring for the Panthers at 19:33 of the second period. Ferran Brown and Christina Kelly picked up assists.

The score remained 1-0 until Moncton’s Catherine Dumas, who was set up by Amelie Dion and Marie-Pier Arsenault, connected for a power-play goal at 13:44 of the third period to even the score.

The final shots-on-goal totals were 39-32 in favour of Moncton, which held a 9-6 advantage in extra time. Winning goaltender was Gabrielle Forget, and Marie-Soleil Deschenes was in goal for UPEI.
