Mid-Isle doubles Pownal in Game 1

Series resumes in Crapaud on Friday

CORNWALL – The Mid-Isle Matrix got off to a winning start in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League playoffs on Tuesday night.

The Matrix built period leads of 1-0 and 4-1 en route to a 4-2 win over the Pownal Red Devils in Game 1 of the best-of-five quarter-final series. Game 2 is in Crapaud on Friday at 6:50 p.m.

At the APM Centre in Cornwall, Cody Miller (1-1), Brady VanderVelden (1-1), Jacob Stewart and Matt Dickieson scored for the Matrix. Single assists were credited to Evan Noonan and Spencer Francis.

For the Red Devils, Harrison Hayden and Logan Toole found the back of the net. Taylor MacDonald and Morgan MacLeod chipped in with helpers.

Alex Smith earned the goaltending win while Colby Lanigan took the loss.

The Matrix received four of the six minor penalties called in the game.

Game 1 in Summerside

In other league playoff action, the Summerside Hemphill GM Capitals will host the Charlottetown Abbies in Game 1 of the best-of-five quarter-final series at Eastlink Arena on Wednesday. The opening faceoff is set for 7:40 p.m.

"It is going to be a tight series" said Capitals head coach Scott Bridges. "They (Abbies) are well coached, and have a very balanced team.

“It should be a great series.”
