CHARLOTTETOWN – Harrison Hayden of the Pownal Red Devils was named the most valuable player of the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League on Monday afternoon.
The league held its annual awards dinner at the Murphy Community Centre in Charlottetown.
Hayden recorded 50 points – 35 goals and 15 assists – in 30 regular-season games to lead the Red Devils. That was good enough for second place in the league’s scoring race, five points behind Chasse Gallant of the Summerside Hemphill GM Capitals.
Gallant, who received the award for most points, scored 32 goals and added 23 assists for 55 points.
Alex Smith of the Mid-Isle Matrix was announced as the league’s top goaltender. Smith had a goals-against average of 1.94.
Colby Mooney of the Kings County Kings was selected as the top defenceman, and Joel Doran of the Sherwood Falcons received the award for most sportsmanlike player. Mooney, who had 29 assists, finished with 33 points in 30 regular-season games to lead the Kings in scoring. Doran received just eight minutes in penalties in 23 contests.
The Alberton-based Western Regals were recognized as the regular-season champions. The Regals, who will host the Atlantic minor midget AAA hockey championship in March, completed the 30-game regular season with a 21-4-5 (won-lost-tied) record.
