CHARLOTTETOWN – It wasn’t easy, but the Belfast Sabres were finally able to eliminate the stubborn Sherwood Falcons in the Razzy’s P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League playoffs on Monday night.

Despite finishing 31 points behind second-place Belfast in the regular season, the last-place Falcons gave the Sabres all they could handle as all four games in the best-of-five quarter-final series were decided by one goal.
The Sabres will now face the third-place and defending-champion Tignish Perry’s Construction Aces in the best-of-five semifinal. That series is expected to start in Belfast this weekend.
At the Cody Banks Arena in Charlottetown, Connor Lea’s goal at 5:09 of the third period snapped a 2-2 tie for the Sabres. Cody McGuirk (1-1) and Mike McQuillan also scored for Belfast while Carter McLellan and Jack Panting added single helpers.
Brady Sinnott (1-1) and Jacob MacLean (1-1) answered for the Falcons. Zach Gould added a single assist.
After a scoreless opening period, the teams were tied 2-2 after the second frame.
Overall, Belfast outshot Sherwood 37-32. Ben Ladner earned the goaltending win, and Steve Lannigan was between the pipes for Sherwood.
Referee T.J. Courtney called four of seven minor penalties against the Sabres. Each team picked up one 10-minute misconduct.
