UPEI closes out regular season on Saturday
CHARLOTTETOWN – It was a missed opportunity for the UPEI Panthers on Friday night.
The Panthers, despite holding a 38-20 shots-on-goal advantage, dropped a 5-2 decision to the visiting Saint Mary’s Huskies to fall to 14-10-3 (won-lost-overtime losses) in the very tight Atlantic University Sport Men’s Hockey Conference.
UPEI could have taken over sole possession of third place with a win, but will now go into the regular-season finale against the St. Francis Xavier X-Men (12-12-3) at MacLauchlan Arena on Saturday night one point behind the Moncton Blue Eagles (16-11-0). Moncton, which lost 5-2 at Acadia (21-3-3) on Friday night, closes out the schedule at Dalhousie (3-23-1) on Saturday evening.
Before 1,078 fans at The Mac, the Huskies scored three unanswered goals late in the third period. Ryan Hillier’s tally at 13:26 broke a 2-2 tie, and Stephen Johnson added insurance markers at 17:43 and 19:33 to put the game out of reach.
Gerrard Grant and Michael D’Orazio also scored for the Huskies (13-14-0).
Dana Fraser and Alex Wall replied for the Panthers.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, and 2-2 at the end of 40 minutes.
Winning goaltender was Anthony Peters, and Wayne Savage took the loss.
