Thomas Stavert has been selected as the first star of the week in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League)..
In four games over a five-day period last week, the 18-year-old from Kensington scored six goals and added a pair of assists to help the Caps go 4-0 (won-lost), including three come-from-behind victories.
In Campbellton, N.B., on Feb. 5, Stavert scored the eventual game-winning goal and added an insurance marker in a 3-1 victory over the Tigers. He was named the game’s first star.
In Summerside on Friday night, Stavert produced one of the most impressive clutch performances in the MHL this season. With his club down 3-1 to the Valley Wildcats with seven minutes remaining, the second-year forward scored at 13:52 and 19:53 of the third period to send the game into overtime. Not to be outdone, Stavert then scored at the 44-second mark of overtime, capping off both his natural hat trick as well as the Capitals’ most dramatic victory of the season – 4-3. Again, Stavert was awarded the game’s first star.
In Memramcook, N.B., on Saturday night, Stavert recorded a pair of assists as the Caps overcame a 5-2 deficit midway through the contest to defeat the Dieppe Commandos 7-6 in a shootout.
Finally, on Sunday afternoon at home, Stavert potted a goal midway through the third period that gave the Capitals a 3-2 lead over the Miramichi Timberwolves after trailing 2-0 early in the second period.
Summerside would eventually prevail 4-3 in a shootout.
Stavert has moved into the team lead in points on the Caps with 43 in 43 games. His 26 goals scored is tied for third most in the MHL so far this season.
The Capitals are home for back-to-back games this long weekend. The Woodstock Slammers visit Eastlink Arena on Sunday and the Pictou County Weeks Crushers provide the opposition for a make-up game on Islander Day (Monday, Feb. 17). Both games will start at 2 p.m.
