ALBERTON – The Western Regals have clinched first place in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League regular season.
The Regals scored two late goals to edge the Mid-Isle Matrix 6-5 in a battle of the league’s top two teams on Saturday night. The Regals’ victory also snapped the Matrix’s 14-game winning streak.
The Regals upped their record to 21-3-4 (won-lost-tied) while the Matrix now sits at 19-7-1. The Alberton-based Regals, who have 46 points, have two games remaining in the regular season, and Mid-isle, which has 39 points and splits its home games between Kensington and Cornwall, have three more games to play before the playoffs.
At the Jacques Cartier Arena, Jake Arsenault’s second goal of the game at 18:01 of the third period pulled the Regals into a 5-5 tie, and Chase McCue’s 12th tally of the season 19 seconds later capped the comeback.
TJ Shea (1-2), Brandon Williams (1-1) and Jason Gallant also scored for the Regals. Thomas Fraser (2), Brendan Shea (2) and Curklan Fraser earned assists.
The Matrix goals came off the sticks of Drew Grady (2), Braeden Stewart, Jacob Stewart and Matt Craig. Assists went to James Murphy (2), Evan Noonan and Brady VanderVelden.
Winning goaltender was Avery Arsenault. Alex Smith was between the pipes for Mid-Isle.
Referee T.J. Courtney called five minors and one double minor for head contact against the Matrix. The Regals were whistled for three minors.
