Three-goal third period keys Vitos’ win over Wild

Kensington visits Charlottetown on Sunday afternoon

KENSINGTON – The Saint John Vitos struck for three unanswered third-period goals en route to a 5-2 win over the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild on Saturday night.

The New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League game attracted an estimated 350 fans to Community Gardens.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, and 2-2 following 40 minutes. Will Kelly’s goal with 13:57 remaining in the third period proved to be the game-winner. Tyler Copeland added an insurance marker with 4:06 to go, and Jean-Michel LeBlanc sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 1:04 showing on the clock.

Copeland, with his first of two in the game, and Logan Saunders also scored for the Vitos, who improved to 23-8-1 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses). Saint John is tied for first place with the Moncton Flyers (13-9-1).

Sam Jay and Kyle Pinksen found the back of the net for Kensington, which takes a 12-17-3 record into Sunday’s road against the Charlottetown Islanders (6-21-4). Game time at MacLauchlan Arena on the UPEI campus is 1:45 p.m.

Max Morrison, Campbell Gallant, Michael Evoy and Cole Hackett earned helpers for the Wild.

Winning goaltender was Krystian Matthews, and Cameron Visser took the loss. Visser was the busier of the two as the Vitos outshot the Wild 53-33.

Each team received five minor penalties.
