SUMMERSIDE – The Summerside Western Capitals staged a dramatic 4-3 come-from-behind overtime win over the Valley Wildcats on Friday night.

Thomas Stavert of Kensington scored twice in the final seven minutes of the third period, including the tying goal with seven seconds remaining, as the Caps overcame a 3-1 deficit in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) game. Stavert then capped a hat-trick performance by netting the winner 44 seconds into overtime before an announced crowd of 633 fans at Eastlink Arena.
The Caps’ win spoiled a valiant effort by Wildcats’ rookie goaltender Blade Mann-Dixon, who turned aside 56 of 60 shots. Dixon stopped all 23 he faced in the first period, and at one point the Caps were outshooting the Wildcats 18-1.
Alex Bradley also scored for the Capitals, who improved to 16-20-2-3 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses). Joey Colatarci (2), Lucas Blomquist, Malik Johnson, Maxim Pitre and Blaize Bridges earned assists.
Josh Worthen (1-1), Jean-Marc Evans-Renaud and Brad Ryckman replied for the Wildcats (18-19-4-1). Colby Tower (2), Pat MacIsaac, Brady Atwater and Austin Harding set up the goals.
The Wildcats held period advantages of 1-0 and 2-1.
Winning goaltender Simon-Pier Chamberland faced 29 shots.
The Capitals were called for three minors, one fighting major and one 10-minute misconduct. The Wildcats were assessed three minors and one fighting major.
The Capitals play a road game against the Dieppe Commandos in Memramcook, N.B., on Saturday night, and return to Eastlink Arena on Sunday to host the Miramichi Timberwolves at 2 p.m.
