In home game versus Sherwood

O’LEARY – The Western Maroons will host the Sherwood Falcons in a P.E.I. Irving Oil Bantam AAA Hockey League game here at the Community Sports Centre on Friday.

The opening faceoff is set for 8 p.m.

The Maroons, who are expected to start Luke Oliver in net against Sherwood, are coming off a very close 2-1 road win over the Mid-Isle Matrix in Kensington on Tuesday night.

“The Matrix is a very good team, and very well-coached,” said Maroons head coach Jeff Ellsworth. “They always play us tough.”

Ellsworth went on to say the Maroons want to keep the momentum going against the Falcons, and continue to build for the playoffs that begin in a couple of weeks.

The Maroons, who have four regular-season games remaining, sport a league-leading 20-3-3 (won-lost-tied) record.

“So much can happen over the next 10 days, teams are pushing to finish their schedules by next Saturday,” said Maroons assistant coach Tylan Robinson. “It’s really tight at the top as us and Summerside are tied with the same record, and Charlottetown is hot on both our heels. It’s going to be a sprint to the finish line.”

Maroons assistant coach TJ Campbell added an injury or suspension this time of the year could play a big role in the outcome of a game.

“We were lucky the other night in Kensington,” added Campbell. “We had two of our key defence out of the lineup, but guys stepped up to play great two-way hockey all three periods.”
