Now hold 15-point lead over Tigers

CAMPBELLTON, N.B. – The Summerside Western Capitals all but secured a playoff berth in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) on Wednesday night.

The Capitals recorded a 3-1 road victory over the Campbellton Tigers. The win improved the Caps’ record to 15-20-2-3 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses), and opened up a 15-point lead for the final playoff berth in the Roger Meek Division over the Tigers (9-32-1-1). The Caps have 12 regular-season games remaining while the Tigers have nine.

 

Stavert scores twice

Before 322 fans at the Campbellton Memorial Civic Centre, Thomas Stavert scored twice and Blaize Bridges added a single tally to account for the Capitals’ goals. Isaac Jay and Maxim Pitre each chipped in with two assists, and Bridges rounded out a two-point night with a single helper.

Patrick Bourgault was the lone Tiger to beat Capitals goaltender Simon-Pier Chamberland, who stopped 26 of 27 shots directed his way. Campbellton goaltender Alexis Paiement faced 36 shots.

The Capitals held period leads of 1-0 and 2-0.

 

Referee Jeff Silliker called six of nine minor penalties against the Tigers, who also picked up one 10-minute misconduct.

 

Busy weekend

The Capitals are back in action at home on Friday night against the Valley Wildcats. Game time at Eastlink Arena is 7 p.m. The Caps play a road game against the Dieppe Commandos on Saturday, and then close out a three-game weekend by hosting the Miramichi Timberwolves on Sunday at 2 p.m.
