Kensington beats Islanders, but struggles vs. Fredericton continue

KENSINGTON – It was a weekend of mixed results for the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild in the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League.

Abel Arsenault, 19, of the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild pursues a loose puck in the corner after a save by Charlottetown Islanders goaltender Sam Walsh. The action took place during the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League game at Community Gardens in Kensington on Saturday night.

The Wild split a pair of games, defeating the Charlottetown Islanders 4-3 on Saturday night and losing 4-1 to the Fredericton Canadiens on Sunday afternoon.

The weekend results leave the Wild at 12-16-3 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses), with five games left in the regular season. The Wild’s next game is Saturday, Feb. 8, when the league-leading Saint John Vitos (22-7-1) visit Community Gardens for a 7:30 p.m. start.

The Wild and Islanders will meet in a provincial championship series at the end of the regular season to determine P.E.I.’s representative at the Atlantic major midget hockey championship tournament.

Canadiens 4 Wild 1

At Willie O’Ree Place, the game was much closer than the final score indicates as the Canadiens scored two empty-net goals in the final minute of the third period.

Patrick Daley (1-1), Taylor LeBlanc, Ben Corey and Daniel Bertrand scored for the Canadiens (12-18-1).

Abel Arsenault, assisted by Spencer Sherren, netted the lone Kensington goal.

The first period was scoreless, and the teams entered the final 20 minutes tied 1-1. LeBlanc’s power-play goal 36 seconds into the third period proved to be the game-winner as Fredericton won its fourth straight game against Kensington.

The Canadiens outshot the Wild 29-19. Aidan Critchlow earned the goaltending win over Bradley Shea.

Referee Thayer Doyle called five minors against each team. The Canadiens also received one checking-from-behind game misconduct.

Wild 4 Islanders 3

Before a big crowd at Community Gardens in Kensington, Arsenault’s unassisted goal broke a 3-3 tie at 9:03 of the third period.

Sam Jay, Colton Chiasson and Cole Hackett also scored for the Wild, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period and held a 3-1 advantage after 40 minutes. Michael Evoy (2), Bailey Webster and Jesse Annear collected assists.

Shawn Corney, Sebastien Cormier and Alex Hambly answered for the Islanders, who dropped to 6-20-4. Johnathon Larter (2), Dylan Wheatley (2), Jonathan Arsenault and Hunter McIntyre added assists.

The final shots-on-goal totals were 50-30 in favour of the Wild. Cameron Visser was the winning goaltender while Sam Walsh took the loss.

Referee Ryan Power called seven minors, one double minor for head contact, one 10-minute misconduct, one fighting major and one game misconduct against the Islanders. The Wild received nine minors, two fighting majors and two game misconducts.
