Maniacs closing in on first-place Vipers

ABRAM-VILLAGE – The Montague Maniacs have closed to within three points of the Island Junior Hockey League-leading Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers.

The Maniacs trimmed the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings 6-1 at the Evangeline Recreation Centre on Saturday night. The win improved the Maniacs’ record to 19-6-1 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses) for 39 points in 26 games. The Vipers, who did not play over the weekend, are 21-4-0 for 42 points in 25 games.

Matt Myers and Matt Higgins each had two goals and two assists to lead the Maniacs against the Red Wings. Tyler Rose and Alex Gallant added single tallies while other helpers went to Stephen Gould (2) and Luke Collins.

Cleve McNeill, Tayler Smith and Jeremy Balderston replied for the Red Wings (9-15-2), who failed to narrow the four-point gap on the third-place Sherwood A&S Scrap Metal Falcons (10-12-4). Ryan McNeill, Robbie Fraser and Tyson Phillips picked up single assists.

The Maniacs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period, and took a 6-1 cushion into the second intermission.

Overall, the Maniacs outshot the Red Wings 58-46. Tyler Whiffin was the winning goaltender, and Chris Gallant took the loss.

Referee Steve Dyer called one minor penalty, one fighting major and one game misconduct against each team.
