Smith’s power-play goal lifts Falcons past Red Wings

CHARLOTTETOWN – A power-play goal by Connor Smith lifted the Sherwood A&S Scrap Metal Falcons to a 4-3 win over the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings on Wednesday night.

Smith’s tally at 9:59 of the third period broke a 3-3 tie in the Island Junior Hockey League game, played at the Cody Banks Arena.

Lucas Holmes (1-1) and Trevor MacKinnon also scored for the third-place Falcons, who improved to 10-11-4 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses) and opened up a four-point lead over the Red Wings (9-14-2). Jackson Donovan (2), John Young (2) and Brandon Birt added assists.

For the Red Wings, Jeremy Balderston (1-2), Colton Gallant and Taylor Smith found the back of the net. Fidan Feta, Robbie Fraser and Jarett MacRae drew assists.

The Falcons held period leads of 2-0 and 3-2.

Winning goaltender was Daniel Nicholson, and Chris Gallant took the loss.

Referees Wayne Doyle and T.J. Courtney called eight minors, one double minor for roughing and two 10-minute misconducts against the Red Wings. The Falcons were whistled for seven minor infractions.
