KENSINGTON – The Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers built a 5-2 third-period lead, and then held on for a 5-4 win over the visiting Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings on Sunday night.

The Island Junior Hockey League contest attracted 316 fans to Community Gardens.

Brett Hogan scored three goals to lead the league-leading Vipers, who upped their record to 21-4-0 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses). Adam Wight and Spencer McAllister netted the other goals while Spencer Montgomery (2), Logan Garnhum and Brandon Gallant contributed assists.

Jeremy Balderston (1-1), Nathan Ellis, Taylor Smith and Curtis Martell answered for the Red Wings (9-13-2). Other assists went to Ryan McNeill, Brandon Adams and Blake Ozon.

The first period ended in a 2-2 tie, and the Vipers took a 4-2 cushion into the second intermission.

The final shots-on-goal totals were 39-38 in favour of the Red Wings. Grant Grady was the winning goaltender, and Chris Gallant was between the pipes for the Abram-Village-based Red Wings.

Referee Steve Dyer called two minors, three fighting majors and three game misconducts against the Red Wings. The Vipers were whistled for eight minors, three fighting majors and four game misconducts.
