Early lead keys Montague victory

CHARLOTTETOWN – The Montague Maniacs jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and then held on to edge the Holland College Hurricanes 5-4 on Saturday night.

The Hurricanes hosted the Island Junior Hockey League game at Simmons Sport Centre.

Damon MacDonald (2-1), Stewart Branstrom (2) and Matt Myers (1-2) scored for the Maniacs, who improved to 18-6-1 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses). Alex Gallant (3), Matt Cox (2), Sam Hughes and Matt Higgins picked up assists.

Nick MacDonald scored a hat trick and Patrick Cummiskey (1-2) accounted for Holland College’s goals. Adam Gardner (2), Eric Locke (2), Jonathan Richards and Will Connolly earned helpers.

The Maniacs, who held period leads of 2-0 and 3-2, built a 5-2 third-period lead before the Hurricanes answered with two late goals.

Geoff Gaudet registered the goaltending win.

Referee Jackson Doughart called five minors against Montague along with one minor and one double minor for spearing against the Hurricanes (4-17-3).

In league action tonight (Sunday), the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings visit the Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers at Community Gardens. The puck will drop at 7 p.m.
