Sabres take over sole possession of second place

SHERWOOD – The Belfast Sabres rallied to defeat the Sherwood Falcons 5-3 on Monday night to take over sole possession of second place in the Razzy’s P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League.

The Sabres, who are 16-7-1 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses), moved two points ahead of the third-place Tignish Perry’s Construction Aces (15-8-1).

At the Cody Banks Arena, Jack Panting had two goals and an assist to lead the Sabres, who received single goals from Cody McGuirk (1-1), Lee Shepherd and Brady Doiron. Nolan Irving (2) and Mike McQuillan added assists.

Belfast, which scored four unanswered third-period goals, trailed 2-1 after 20 minutes and 3-1 going into the final frame.

Zac Mella (1-1), Brady Sinnott (1-1) and Nick Trainor countered for the Falcons (3-19-2).

Winning goaltender was Jason Whiteway. Steve Lannigan was in goal for Sherwood.

The Falcons were whistled for four of the game’s five minor penalties.
