O’LEARY – The Western Maroons will entertain the Mid-Isle Matrix in a P.E.I. Irving Oil Bantam AAA Hockey League contest here at the Community Sports Centre on Friday.
The puck will drop at 8 p.m.
The Maroons will try to keep atop the league standings and improve on a 16-2-2 (won-lost-tied) record. The Matrix, meanwhile, brings a 10-9-2 (won-lost-tied) record to the table.
“There are only a handful of points separating first to third in this league, and you cannot afford to take a night off,” said Maroons head coach Jeff Ellsworth.
It’s a big weekend for the Maroons, who also visit the Charlottetown Abbies on Sunday. The Abbies defeated the Maroons in the final of the Miramichi tournament last weekend.
“Every two points from here on out are huge,” said Ellsworth. “Our playoff format states that if you finish tops in the league you get a first-round bye, and if you have any injuries that would be a great time to get the team healthy.
“Also, it gives you home-ice advantage throughout the entire playoffs.”
Maroons assistant coach Tylan Robinson added the team is looking to finish strong.
“We told the boys from the start of camp it’s not how you start it’s how you finish and in order to have success now is the time to push even harder.”
