BEDFORD, N.S. – P.E.I.’s two major midget teams were eliminated from the East Coast Ice Jam hockey tournament on Saturday night.
The Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild and Charlottetown Islanders each dropped quarter-final games. The Halifax McDonald’s edged the Wild 2-1 while the Miramichi Rivermen defeated the Islanders 5-2.
The Wild and Islanders will resume play in the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League next weekend.
Halifax and Kensington played a scoreless first period, and the McDonald’s took a 1-0 lead into the final frame.
Sam Jay, assisted by Cole Hackett and Campbell Gallant, scored Kensington’s lone goal and goaltender Cameron Visser stopped 33 of 35 shots. The Wild directed 29 shots at the Halifax goal.
Overall, the Wild finished the tournament with a 3-2-0 (won-lost-tied) record.
The Rivermen jumped out to period leads of 1-0 and 3-0.
Jonathan Arsenault scored two quick goals early in the third period to bring the Islanders to within 3-2, but that’s as close as they could get.
Sam Walsh tended goal for Charlottetown.
Overall, the Islanders completed play at 2-2-1.
