In Island Junior Hockey League action

CHARLOTTETOWN – The second period proved to be the difference in Wednesday night’s Island Junior Hockey League game between the Sherwood A&S Scrap Metal Falcons and the Holland College Hurricanes.

The Falcons erupted for five unanswered second-period goals en route to a 7-4 victory.

It was an important two points for the Falcons, who moved one point ahead of the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings into third place in the league standings. Sherwood’s record is 8-9-4 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses) while the Red Wings are 9-11-1.

At the Cody Banks Arena, Matthew McQuaid (2-1), Josh Scott (1-1), Tyson Blue, Connor Dillon, Brandon Birt and Donald Duffy scored for the Falcons. Trevor MacKinnon, John Young and Craig Dougan each picked up two assists.

Jonathan Richards (2), Nick MacDonald (1-3) and Adam Gardner countered for the Hurricanes (4-13-2).

The Hurricanes led 2-1 after the opening period, but the Falcons took a 6-2 cushion into the second intermission.

Winning goaltender was Daniel Nicholson.
