Kensington opens up five-point lead atop standings
ABRAM-VILLAGE – Ryan Murray scored at 15:17 of the third period to give the Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers an important 5-4 win over the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings on Saturday night.
Murray’s goal broke a 4-4 tie as the Vipers increased their lead atop the Island Junior Hockey League standings to five points over the Montague Maniacs. Kensington is 16-4-0 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses) while Montague is 13-5-1. The Vipers’ win also avenged a 4-1 loss to the Red Wings in Kensington on Boxing Day.
At the Evangeline Recreation Centre, Spencer McAllister’s two goals and an assist led the way for the Vipers. Brett Hogan (1-1) and Alex Montgomery also scored while other helpers were credited to Adam Wight (2), Kyle Doucette, Spencer Montgomery, Logan Garnhum, Drew Coulson, Ryan Kelly and Jordan Mayhew.
Jeremy Balderston (2), Curtis Martell and Lucas Matthews answered for the Red Wings. David Muise (3), Ryan McNeill (2), Colton Gallant (2) and Robbie Fraser picked up helpers.
The Vipers built a 4-2 lead after the first period, and the teams were tied 4-4 following two periods.
Dylan McQuaid was the winning goaltender while Chris Gallant suffered the loss. The final shots-on-goal totals were 54-32 in favour of the Vipers.
Referee Jeff Affleck called a total of three minor infractions in the game – two of those against Kensington.
