At Evangeline Recreation Centre on Saturday night

ABRAM-VILLAGE – Prince County’s two entries in the Island Junior Hockey League will renew their rivalry here at the Evangeline Recreation Centre on Saturday night.

The Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings will host the defending-champion Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers in a 7 o’clock start.

The Vipers bring a 15-4-0 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses) record into the game, and the third-place Red Wings, who won five of seven games in December, are 9-10-1.

It’s a big game for both teams as the Vipers are only three points ahead of the Montague Maniacs (13-5-1), and the Red Wings hold a one-point lead over the Sherwood A&S Scrap Metal Falcons (7-9-4).

The Red Wings won the last meeting between the teams on Boxing Day in Kensington. The final score was 4-1.

Red Wings general manager JC Gallant described that game as “intense and chippy,” and says Saturday’s contest should be no different.

The Red Wings have been hit with the loss of a few key players, but Gallant adds it has provided an opportunity for other players to step up in key roles.

The Red Wings general manager used last Saturday’s 5-0 home-ice win over the Falcons as an example of “what a team effort and hard work” can result in.

Red Wings goaltender Chris Gallant has been red hot lately, allowing just one goal in his last two games. Gallant will get the start against the Vipers.

The Vipers and Red Wings always attract big crowds, and another large gathering is expected.
