CHARLOTTETOWN – The Mid-Isle Matrix took over sole possession of second place in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League standings on Monday night.

The Matrix defeated the Sherwood Falcons 5-2 to move two points ahead of the third-place Charlottetown Abbies. Mid-Isle’s record is 10-6-1 (won-lost-tied) while the Abbies are 7-6-5.

At the Cody Banks Arena, Drew Grady scored a hat trick to spark the Matrix, who received single goals from Easton Smith and Ben Keefe. Brennon Jarvis (2), James Murphy (2), Evan Noonan, Cody Miller and Jacob Stewart drew assists.

Tanner Lund and Jordan Birt replied for the Falcons (5-5-6). Riley Dunphy (2) and Cory Ramsay assisted.

The Matrix held period leads of 1-0 and 2-0.

Winning goaltender was Sean MacPhee. Ethan Malcom was between the pipes for the Falcons.

Referee Jeff Heron called a total of five minor penalties in the game – three of those against the Falcons.
