Caps’ Fitzgerald named MHL's second star of week

DIEPPE, N.B. – Summerside Western Capitals’ rookie defenceman Cavan Fitzgerald has been named the MHL’s (Maritime Junior Hockey League) second star of the week.

The 17-year-old defenceman from Lingan, N.S., posted four points in two games as the Caps split a pair of home contests against the Yarmouth Mariners last weekend.

Friday, Fitzgerald recorded two assists, including one on the eventual game-winning goal, in the Capitals’ 5-2 win.

The following night, Fitzgerald scored once and added an assist in a 7-3 loss.

Fitzgerald has recorded an impressive 16 points in 22 games this season. He is a product of the Cape Breton Tradesmen program in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League.

In 70 regular-season games over two seasons with the Tradesmen, Fitzgerald notched nine goals and 32 assists. He was a territorial draft pick of the Capitals last June.

The Capitals, who are 10-15-1-1 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses) return to action with a New Year’s Eve home date against the Miramichi Timberwolves (18-6-0-3). The opening faceoff at Eastlink Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
