Five UPEI Panthers and a P.E.I. native have helped Canada win gold in men’s hockey at the Winter Universiade in Italy.

Canada beat Kazakhstan 6-2 Saturday to avenge a 4-2 loss to them in the preliminary round.

"Biggest win I have ever been apart of," said UPEI Panthers defenceman Matt Maione, who scored in the victory.

The Canadian squad, comprised of Atlantic University Sport (AUS) players, includes Panthers players Wayne Savage, Maione, Alex Wall and Chris DeSousa. Panthers coach Forbes MacPherson is an assistant to head coach Gardiner MacDougall, of Bedeque. St. F.X.'s Brad Peddle is also an assistant on the coaching staff.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling. What can you say?,” said Team Canada head coach Gardiner MacDougall from UNB. “We had a slogan BIW and the guys figured it out as we went on our journey – be the best in the world. How often do you become the best in the world in anything you do?

"In this case, this is a Canadian passion, hockey. The guys should be very, very proud."

Chris Culligan scored twice while singles went to Maione, Nick MacNeil, Mike Cazzola and Josh Day. Canada held period leads of 3-1 and 5-1.

The last time Canada won the event was in 2007, the last time the AUS represented the country. It finished second in 2009 when West players wore the Maple Leaf and third in 2011 with Ontario university players.

UPEI athletics and recreation says, weather permitting, Team Canada is expected to arriving in Halifax Sunday at 10 p.m.
