With home-ice win over Red Wings

MONTAGUE – The Montague Maniacs have set the stage for a very interesting showdown with the first-place Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers on Sunday night.

The Maniacs defeated the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings 7-3 on Friday night to close within three points of the Vipers in the Island Junior Hockey League. The two teams are scheduled to meet at Community Gardens in Kensington on Sunday at 7 p.m. (see story on page B3).

Two goals

At the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre, Alex Gallant scored twice to lead the hometown Maniacs past the Red Wings. Matt Myers, Tanner Nicholson, Damon MacDonald, Stewart Branstrom and Matt Higgins also scored for Montague, which improved to 13-5-1.

Daniel Muise, Tyson Phillips and Benji Gaudet answered for the Red Wings (7-10-1).

The Maniacs held period leads of 2-1 and 5-2.

Tyler Whiffin earned the goaltending win over Chris Gallant.
