Power play keys Matrix win over S’side

NORTH RUSTICO – The power play proved to be the difference for the Mid-Isle Matrix here at the North Star Arena on Thursday night.

P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League

The Matrix connected for three goals with the man advantage in a 4-1 victory over the Summerside Hemphill GM Capitals in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League.

Brady Vandervelden scored twice for the Matrix while singles came off the sticks of Jacob Stewart (1-1) and Zach Kennific. Cody Miller (2), James Murphy, Evan Noonan and Ben Landry drew assists.

Spencer Groom, assisted by Cody Deighan and Jorgen Strom, netted Summerside’s lone goal.

The Matrix built period leads of 1-0 and 3-1.

Alex Smith picked up the goaltending win, and Blake Arsenault was between the pipes for the Capitals.

Referee Jeff Affleck called eight of 15 minor penalties against the Matrix. Each team also received three double minors for head contact and two 10-minute misconducts.
