Players pay tribute to late curler

SUMMERSIDE – The defending women’s champions are off to a winning start in this year’s Pepsi P.E.I. junior curling championships here at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club.

The Veronica Smith rink from the Cornwall Curling Club opened play with an 11-5 win over clubmate Emily Keen on Thursday night. Smith scored a total of five deuces, including three with the hammer.

It was one of five games during the opening draw. In other women’s action, Meghan Ching of Cornwall bounced back to score five in the third end after giving up a steal of three in the first to outlast Jenny McLean of the host Silver Fox 11-7, and Amanda MacLean of Cornwall counted three deuces and one three-ender to down Lauren Moerike of the Charlottetown Curling Complex 10-4.

In men’s action, the Matthew MacLean foursome from the Cornwall and Silver Fox clubs trimmed Leslie Noye of the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton 10-1, and Justin Campbell of the Silver Fox scored a single point in the 10th end with last-rock advantage to edge Donald DeWolfe of Cornwall 5-4.

Play resumes with two draws on Friday at 1 and 7 p.m. Defending men’s champion Tyler Smith will play his first game against the Silver Fox’s Alex MacFadyen in the early draw.

The winning men’s and women’s teams will represent P.E.I. at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian junior curling championships in Liverpool, N.S., from Jan. 18 to 26.

Moment of silence

A moment of silence was held for Kevin Gallant before the opening draw. Gallant, a former longtime member of the Matthew MacLean rink, was killed in a snowmobile accident on Wednesday.

David O’Connor, father of team member Noah O’Connor, spoke on behalf of the rink, and encouraged everyone to wear orange ribbons handed out by the MacLean team in memory of their former teammate. He also asked all teams to “curl for Kevin” this weekend.

All teams, tournament officials and the majority of fans were wearing orange ribbons during the first draw.

Tournament officials also announced a change in Saturday’s schedule to allow teams to attend Gallant’s funeral in the afternoon. Saturday’s draws will now be held at 9 a.m., and 6 p.m.
