ABRAM-VILLAGE – The Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings built a four-goal lead and then held on to edge the Holland College Hurricanes 7-6 in Island Junior Hockey League action on Saturday night.

The Red Wings, who held period leads of 2-1 and 4-3, struck for three goals in the first 9:42 of the third period to open up a 7-3 cushion. However, the Hurricanes refused to quit and answered back with three straight goals to close to within one goal with 4:02 showing on the clock.
But the fourth-place Red Wings managed to protect that slim lead to pull out the important victory, which opened up a five-point lead over the Hurricanes. The Red Wings will take a 6-8-1 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses) record into Sunday’s 7 p.m. game against the Montague Maniacs (11-4-1) in Souris.
The Hurricanes, who have lost 10 games in a row, fell to 3-12-1. However, five of those losses have been by one goal.
At the Evangeline Recreation Centre, Willie Gaudet scored a hat trick and added an assist to lead the host Red Wings. Jeremy Balderston (1-2), Benji Gaudet (1-1), Logan Arsenault and Lucas Matthews also dented the twine while Dylan Rayner (2), Colton Gallant, Riley Shea, Fidan Feta, Curtis Martell, Tyson Phillips and Jarret McRae recorded assists.
Jonny Richards (3), Nick MacDonald (2-2) and Patrick Cummiskey found the back of the net for the Hurricanes. Dan Gallant (3), Blake Ozon (3), Eric Locke (2), Will Connolly and Andrew Skinner set up the goals.
Chris Gallant was the winning goaltender. Matt Derry was between the pipes for the Hurricanes.
Referee Thane Arsenault called a total of 11 minor penalties – six of those against the Hurricanes.
