Campbellton visits Summerside Sunday afternoon
TRURO, N.S. – Two goals early in the third period proved to be the difference for the Truro Bearcats against the Summerside Western Capitals on Saturday night.
The Bearcats scored five goals in the final 20 minutes to turn a 2-2 game after two periods into a 7-3 victory in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League).
It was the first of two weekend games for the Capitals, who host the Campbellton Tigers at Eastlink Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Caps take a 4-11-1-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses) record into that game.
Before 721 fans at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre, Phillip Fife gave the Bearcats a 3-2 lead 2:56 into the third period, and Tyler Morrison made it 4-2 at 4:02. Kyle Tibbo (15:26) and Colby Lanceieve (18:07), with a short-handed goal into an empty net, scored late to give the Bearcats a 6-2 advantage.
Thomas Stavert, with his second goal of the night, at 18:36, and Truro’s Ryan Moore at 18:50 closed out the scoring. Alex Bradley scored the other goal for the Caps, who led 2-1 after the first period.
Morrison (2), Islander Jean-Marc Evans-Renaud (2), Jacob Smith, Mitchell Robillard and Cal Gloade all added two assists for Truro (10-3-0-1).
Overall, the Bearcats outshot the Caps 35-19, including a 15-7 advantage in the third period. Jacob Fancy earned the goaltending win while Simon-Pier Chamberland took the loss.
Referee Brett Boyce had a quiet night, calling three of four minor penalties against Truro. The teams played a penalty-free second period.
