In P.E.I. Irving Oil Bantam AAA Hockey League action
O’LEARY – The Western Maroons opened the P.E.I. Irving Oil Bantam AAA Hockey League regular season in front of a huge crowd last week, and had a convincing 9-1 win over the Sherwood Falcons.
The Maroons will have a tougher task on Friday evening as they face the Summerside Capitals, who are coming off an 8-6 win over Kings County. The opening faceoff at the O’Leary Community Sports Centre is set for 8 p.m.
"We are in for a tough game,” said Maroons head coach Jeff Ellsworth. “Summerside is one of the stronger teams in the league that is very well-coached.
“We need to play flawless hockey to have a chance to win.”
The Maroons have a very light schedule out of the gate, playing three games in three weeks – all at home.
"Its a tough way to start a season to get in a groove,” said Maroons assistant coach Tylan Robinson. “We were hoping to have a few games played to this point to get the boys in shape quicker, but in November we play 11 games in a month.”
After Maroons goaltender Luke Oliver turned in a stellar performance against Sherwood, Bronson Banks will get the call versus Summerside.
“Our organization is very lucky to have two No. 1 goalies that will give us a chance to win every night,” said Maroons goaltending coach Adam MacLennan. “They both play and compete very hard and really push each other. It’s almost like they feed off one another.”
Maroons assistant coach TJ Campbell said that even though his team won its opener 9-1, there is room for improvement.
“We had a great practice on Monday night where we identified a few weaknesses and addressed them, and we hope that each game we can get stronger as the season goes forward,” continued Campbell.
