Tignish hosts Southside in opener
CHARLOTTETOWN – The new season of the Razzy's P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League gets underway on Friday, when the defending-champion Tignish Perry's Construction Aces host the Southside MacDonald's Excavation / EF MacPhee Lynx.
P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
The Aces, who are going for a third straight Island championship, have moved their primary ice time at Credit Union Arena to Friday night this season.
The Lynx has 12 players returning from last year, including goaltenders Dylan Garnhum and John Miller.
Coaches Mitchell DesRoches, Tyler Doucette and Tyler LaPierre look forward to another strong season from the Crapaud-based team.
The Lynx will host the Sherwood Falcons in Crapaud on Saturday at 7:40 p.m.
The Falcons will have a young team and will rely on a few veterans for leadership, including Owen Wilson, Zack Gould, Jordan Arsenault and Brad Milligan.
"We will have to take advantage of our speed and try to capitalize on that," says Falcons manager Robert Maddix. "We will have a few young players who can put the puck in the net and a solid defence, which will turn the play to the offensive side with Alex Hughes and Michael Gould.”
Also on Saturday, the North River Island Excavators Flames will host the Belfast Surge Energy Sabres at the APM Centre in Cornwall. The opening faceoff is set for 7:50 p.m.
The Flames are hoping to be among the league leaders this season with 13 returnees, including goalies Taylor Doyle and Kurt Willis. Cameron MacMurdo, Ryan McGuigan, Brad Vukicevic and Lal Hennessey are expected to lead the team offensively while Logan LeClair, Joseph Ferguson and Curtis Gant anchor the defence.
The Sabres’ offence will need to come from new sources this year as their top-three scorers graduated from junior hockey last season.
Belfast has also switched their primary home date, and will host most home games on Saturday nights this season.
Monday night, the Falcons will host the Summerside Source for Sports Capitals at the Cody Banks Arena in an 8:35 start.
The Capitals expect to compete with a well-balanced offensive attack and solid defensive play. The goaltending tandem of Jake Perry and Catlin Richard, who won back-to-back provincial midget AA titles with Summerside in 2011 and 2012, will man the pipes.
Travis Thibodeau, Ryan MacArthur and Clark Gallant of the former Tyne Valley junior C team will be joined by Tyler MacKay to form the nucleus of the defensive core.
Tyler Peters, Tyne Valley's leading scorer from last year, will be joined by power forwards Cody Arsenault and Tyler Dexter while the midget AA line of Josh Bernard, Matt MacDonald and Greg Arsenault team will reunite.
Souris will start its season next weekend due to the late opening of the Eastern Kings Sportsplex.
All seven teams will advance to the playoffs, with the top seed receiving a first-round bye after the 28-game regular season.
The league champion will represent P.E.I. at the Maritime-Hockey North junior C championship in Liverpool, N.S., in late March.
