In Island Junior Hockey League
KENSINGTON – The Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers will open the 2013-14 Island Junior Hockey League regular season on home ice here at Community Gardens on Sunday.
The Vipers will host the Sherwood A&S Scrap Metal Falcons in a 7 p.m. start.
The Vipers come into the new campaign having won four straight league titles, and are also defending Atlantic Canadian champions after winning their second Don Johnson Memorial Cup in three years last April.
The Vipers will have a new-look team this season after graduating five players and promoting three to junior A with the Summerside Western Capitals. The Vipers will also be without defenceman Drew Coulson, who is on an exchange trip, until January, and high-scoring forward Brett Hogan is playing soccer with the UPEI Panthers and will join the team following that season.
Defenceman Ryan Murray and forward Spencer McAllister are two newcomers to the Vipers. Both come out of the Mid-Isle Matrix program.
The Vipers have also added forward Josh Bowman, who played with the Bridgewater Lumberjacks of the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) last season, and goaltender Dylan McQuaid, who split time between the Summerside Western Capitals and Holland College Hurricanes last season.
McQuaid gives the Vipers arguably one of the top three goalies in the league, and he will be counted on to keep the team in games in the early part of the season.
The Vipers drew very well last season, and hope to that support continues this season. Ticket prices remain the same, and season passes will be on sale as well.
