Lucas Batt, 14, of the Dieppe Commandos has his second-period shot stopped by Summerside Western Capitals goaltender Grant Grady. Hustling back into the play is Capitals defenceman Harrison Wood, 6.
The MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) contest was played before an estimated crowd of 500 fans at Eastlink Arena on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
The Commandos went on to build period leads of 4-0 and 5-1 despite being outshot 39-29 overall, thanks in large part to a 15-5 advantage for the Caps in the third period.
Lucas Batt’s hat trick paced the Commandos’ offence while Ryan Langan and Max Bernier each had a goal and two assists. Former Capital Colton Parsons netted the other goal for Dieppe, which improved to 3-2-1-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses).
Cavan Fitzgerald netted both goals for the Capitals, who fell to 1-3-0-0 with their third straight loss.
Connor Wilkinson earned the goaltending win. Alex Kelly started in goal for the Capitals, and Grant Grady relieved him after giving up four goals on seven shots in the game’s first 17:05. Grady stopped 17 of 18 shots the rest of the way.
With the Commandos leading 4-1, the Capitals had two glorious opportunities to get back in the game. Wilkinson stopped Caps’ rookie Alex Bradley on a penalty shot with 11:30 remaining in the middle frame, and the Caps also failed to score on a two-man power play for 47 seconds.
The Capitals have a busy upcoming weekend as they play three games in less than 72 hours. The Caps visit the Woodstock Slammers on Friday night, make a return trip to Dieppe on Saturday evening and host the Campbellton Tigers on Sunday at 2 p.m.
