QUEBEC - Michael Ryder and Chuck Kobasew scored as the Boston Bruins downed the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 in an NHL pre-season match-up Sunday night before packed grandstands at the Quebec Colisee.
Josh Gorges scored in the third period for Montreal (2-2).
Rookie Tuukka Rask had a strong game in goal for the Bruins (3-1), who were officially the home team even if the fans appeared to support the Canadiens, the once-bitter rivals of the defunct Quebec Nordiques.
Ryder was on a rush when he saw his wrist shot go off Ryan O'Byrne's knee and change direction to fool Montreal goaltender Jaroslav Halak 4:12 into the game.
Gorges looked to slip on the puck after defence partner Mathieu Carle passed into his skates and in the resulting confusion, veteran Mark Recchi slipped it to Kobasew at the right side for a shot over the sprawled Halak at 13:58 of the second frame.
Montreal was on a power play to start the third period when Gorges floated a high shot through traffic from the point that got by Rask. The Canadiens poured on the pressure for the rest of the period, but couldn't get another one past the 22-year-old goalie from Finland.
The Canadiens return home to face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday night.
