Overcomes triple bogey on first hole of final round to pull out one-shot victory

LINKLETTER – Dave Chisholm’s round ended a lot better than it started on Sunday.

Summerside Golf and Country Club general manager Dallas Desjardins congratulates the overall men’s and ladies winners of the club championship, Dave Chisholm and Corinna Forster. The 36-hole event attracted just less than 70 participants over the weekend.

The 43-year-old Summerside resident rebounded from a triple bogey on the first hole to win his first-ever club championship at the Summerside Golf and Country Club.

Chisholm shot an opening-round 76 on Saturday, and carded a 77 over the final 18 holes to finish with a 153 total in the Men’s Championship Division. That was one shot better than Tommy Schurman, who had rounds of 76 and 78 for a 154 score.

“We kind of laughed before we teed off,” said Chisholm, 43. “Nick Peters, the new pro here, asked me, ‘Do you play many tournaments? How do you play?

“I said, ‘I normally shoot 76, 77,’ is what we joked about. If you go back in my handicap record I’m a lot of 76s, 77s, never really low, never really high.

“I suppose it’s probably one of the highest scoring totals to win a club championship here, but the weather conditions were such 76, 77 was pretty good. I thought I had to shoot 75 today (Sunday) to win.”

Chisholm actually shot back-to-back 76s in last year’s club championship en route to recording the top low-net score. However, last year’s tournament was played in much better weather conditions.

“It was probably the worst two days of the summer that we’ve had because we have had wonderful weather,” said Chisholm, who recently recorded his first career hole-in-one. “It wasn’t easy by any means.

“The wind was hard, the rain was hard, but you had to keep your head in it. That was the hardest part.”

Tested right away

The mental side of Chisholm’s game was tested right off the bat on hole No. 1.

“I hit a good drive down the left side, and all of a sudden a big gust of wind came up and the next thing we saw it hit the pavement,” said Chisholm, a teacher at Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside. “I had to re-tee another one and hit it down the middle and it didn’t hit the green, the north wind was dead in your face.

“I ended up getting up and down for seven, which isn’t a great score.”

Chisholm quickly regrouped, making a lot of pars before another bogey late in the front nine. He then put together another string of pars.

“We kind of laughed before we teed off. Nick Peters, the new pro here, asked me, ‘Do you play many tournaments? How do you play? I said, ‘I normally shoot 76, 77,’ is what we joked about. If you go back in my handicap record I’m a lot of 76s, 77s, never really low, never really high. “Somebody just asked me what was the best shot I hit today?,” said Chisholm. “I said I hit a lot of regular shots, I didn’t hit anything spectacular by any means. The best putt I made was on 18.”

That was a pressure-filled 5 1/2-, six-footer straight up the hill to clinch the title.

“Tommy and I were pretty sure I had a one-shot lead over him and two shots over Tony (Perry), and Tommy just had a tap-in for his par,” explained Chisholm. “If I missed that we are going to a playoff.”

Member since 1996

Chisholm moved to Summerside in 1995, and has been a member at the Summerside club since the summer of 1996. He admits his game has come along way since then, noting he started with a “17 or 18 handicap.” His handicap is now down to four.

Chisholm is an active club member and golf is a family affair. He heads up the men’s association with Jason Ahern and also works with the club’s juniors, a program his daughter Mya and son Max participate in. Chisholm and his wife, Julie, also play couples nights.

“We are lucky to have the course here,” said Chisholm. “I spend a lot of time here and my kids spend a lot of time here.”
