CHARLOTTETOWN – A new era in amateur golf in Prince Edward Island starts this year.
Players will attempt to qualify through the Island Coastal amateur championships for the provincial team to represent P.E.I. at the new Atlantic golf championship, which will be held at Bell Bay in Cape Breton in August.
“The new Atlantic championship has been in development by the four provinces for nearly three years,” said P.E.I. Golf Association executive director Ron MacNeill.
“The idea behind it is to give the region’s best players a first-class competitive experience. It will allow golfers to compete within their own age group against the best in the region.”
Twenty players from six divisions will represent P.E.I. The first two rounds of the tournament will see the four provinces compete for the Atlantic Cup.
Individual scores from the two rounds, plus a third round, will determine individual Atlantic champions. Players who win their individual divisions will receive an invitation to play at Golf Canada’s 2015 nationals.
Following Cape Breton this year, the 2015 championship will be held in Newfoundland and Labrador. New Brunswick will in 2016, followed by P.E.I. in 2017.
The Island Coastal amateur championship will be held at the Summerside Golf Course on July 5 and 6.
“Given what’s at stake we’re expecting a full field for this year’s tournament,” MacNeill said. “In addition to the 20 team spots up for grabs players are also playing for the coveted men’s, women’s and senior amateur championship titles.”
Registration for the amateur championships close on Friday, June 27. Entry forms and other information can be found at www.peiga.ca.
