CHARLOTTETOWN – The 2014 Holland College Junior Order of Merit Golf Tour is getting ready to begin its 2014 season.
The tour, which is managed by the P.E.I. Golf Association (PEIGA), offers junior boys and girls an opportunity to play weekly tournaments at courses across the Island between June and August. The first event is scheduled for Eagles Glenn Golf Course in Cavendish on June 8.
Through the weekly competitions juniors earn points that are used to select teams to represent P.E.I. at regional and national championships. The tour also has its own season-ending championship, which takes place in late August.
Players invited to be part of the association’s provincial development team are also selected through their performance on the tour.
“The Holland College Order of Merit Tour is a great place for junior golfers to develop their competitive skills,” said PEIGA executive director Ron MacNeill. “The season-long program gives our junior players the chance to play different courses every week, so they get used to different conditions.”
The tour is managed for the PEIGA by CPGA provincial golf coach Dallas Desjardins, who headed up last year’s P.E.I. Canada Games team.
“Dallas does an incredible job with the juniors, and our program is reaching new heights,” said MacNeill. “He has a real passion for kids, and they respond to his coaching.
“We are very excited about the future of golf in the province, and expect to see Island juniors performing well wherever their golf takes them.”
Registration for the Holland College Order of Merit Golf Tour is limited, and juniors are encouraged to get their application in to the PEIGA as quickly as possible.
Information about the tour, including the 2014 schedule as well as the registration form, can be found on the association’s website.
