LINKLETTER - Jamie Wood of the Rustico Resort Golf and Tennis Club won the opening leg of the Canadian Professional Golf Association (CPGA) Atlantic Calloway Cup event in dramatic fashion Monday.

Wood prevailed over Blair MacPhail of Holland College on the second playoff hole at the Summerside Golf and Country Club.

"It was nerve-wracking, there is no doubt about that," said Wood. "I said to the guys that it was probably the most nervous I've ever been, which is something for me.

"You never know what's going to happen in a playoff."

However, this was not the first time Wood has golfed in a playoff.

"But just for club championships and things like that," he added. "Nothing major!"

Identical 71 scores

Wood and MacPhail fired identical 71 scores through the first 18 holes. They opened the playoff by both making par on the par-4 18th hole. Then they moved to the par-3 10th hole, where Wood made par by sinking a four-to-five-foot putt after MacPhail missed about a 12-foot putt for par.

"I had about 190 (yards) to the hole and I didn't want to be past the hole," said Wood, describing No. 10. "I went with one less (club), which was a smooth four (iron), and centre of the green.

"I didn't want to go in the bunker, and I didn't want to go long."

Including the two playoff holes, Wood finished with 13 pars, four birdies and three bogeys. Three of those birdies - 2, 3 and 4 - came in a row on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes.

"I had a good run on the back nine," said Wood. "I kept it in play and what you have to do in Summerside is keep it below the hole. I did that most of the day."

MacPhail finished with 14 pars, three birdies and three bogeys.

Local entries

Dallas Desjardins, executive professional of the host Summerside Golf and Country Club, and Nick Frid, Summerside's head pro, shot identical 76s.

Frid shot a 3-over-par 38 on the front nine and a 1-over-par 38 on the back nine. Desjardins, who was in the second last group and played most of the last half of the round in a heavy rain, had splits of 35 and 41.

With both playoff holes played in a steady rain, how much of a factor was the weather?

"Those are the conditions and I've played in rain before, and it doesn't really affect me," said Wood.
