CORNWALL – The Lauren Ferguson rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside captured first place at the KFC provincial under-13 curling championship on Sunday afternoon.

Ferguson pulled out an 8-7 victory over their clubmates, the Connor Lilly team, in the Page A-vs.-B game.

The Shelley MacFadyen-coached Ferguson team, which includes third stone Sierra Clyke, second stone Jordan Dunphy-Condon and lead Olivia Barbour, scored triples in the first two ends for a 6-0 lead. But Lilly rallied with a single, a stolen double and a stolen four-point end to lead 7-6 coming home in the six-end contest. Ferguson scored a deuce in the final end to pull out the win.

Other members of the Lilly rink are A.J. Cahill at third stone, Colin MacKenzie-MacLeod at second stone and lead Draven Kowalski.

Saturday, Ferguson qualified first out of the triple-knockout round with a 7-4 win over Lilly in the A qualifier. Lilly took the B qualifier, with an 8-3 win over defending-champion Mitchell Schut and his team from Cornwall and Charlottetown.

Schut was the winner of Sunday afternoon’s bronze-medal Page game between the third and fourth qualifiers from the triple-knockout round. Schut came from behind with a triple in the final end to edge Cornwall’s Hayden Ford team 6-5 and finish the event in third place.

Other members of the Schut rink are third stone Liam Kelly, second stone Chase MacMillan and lead Liam Barbrick, with coaches Butch McGee and Mike Schut. Rounding out the fourth-place Ford foursome were Emily McQuaid, Rachel MacLean, and Lilly Tweel, with alternate Halles Reardon, and coaches Brenda MacMillan and Berry Ford.

Ford qualified third out of the triple-knockout with a 7-3 win over Montague’s Damien Collings on Sunday morning. Schut grabbed the final qualifying spot for the Page round with an 11-2 win over Katie Shaw of Charlottetown.

Eight teams took part in the event, and teams could be made up of any combination of male and female players.
