In P.E.I. under-16 curling châ€™ships
ALBERTON â€“ The defending-champion Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox and the Lauren Lenentine rink from Cornwall picked up where they left off last year, winning their opening games of the Oâ€™Connor Glass Curl P.E.I. provincial under-16 curling championships on Thursday night.
The opening girlsâ€™ draw was played at Maple Leaf Curling Club in Oâ€™Leary, and the boys got their competition started at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.
The rest of the schedule for the five boysâ€™ teams and eight girlsâ€™ rinks entered will be played in Alberton.
The boys are playing a round robin, with the top three teams advancing to the playoffs. The girls are playing a triple-knockout format, with a Page playoff.
MacFadyen started defence of last yearâ€™s championship by defeating Silver Fox clubmate Alex Gallant 10-0 in a game that lasted only six ends. In the only other boysâ€™ game, Donald DeWolfe from Cornwall defeated the Devin Schut Cornwall/Charlottetown foursome 11-4 in seven ends.
Owen Collier and his Montague team had the opening-round bye. He will play DeWolfe on Friday at 10 a.m.
Lenentine, who switched positions with last yearâ€™s winning skip, Rachel Oâ€™Connor, had a closer game, defeating the Karlie Lewis rink from Alberton 7-4 in seven ends.
Other girlsâ€™ scores were Katie Worth (Cornwall) 10, Breanna Rayner (Maple Leaf) 6; Kaleigh MacKay (Crapaud/Montague) 10, Kristie Rogers (Cornwall) 0 (six ends), and Lauren Moerike (Charlottetown) 8, Maddison Moore (Silver Fox) 2 (five ends).
Fridayâ€™s draws in Alberton are at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 7 p.m.
