For 2015 Canada Winter Games

CHARLOTTETOWN – The four P.E.I. curling training teams have been determined for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

The Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside and the Tyler Smith foursome from Montague are the two men’s teams. Kaleigh MacKay and her Montague/Crapaud team, and Lauren Moerike and her Charlottetown Curling Complex rink have secured the two women’s berths.

The training teams will compete in men’s and women’s best-of-three game series in November, with the winning teams earning the right to represent P.E.I. in curling in the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C., from Feb. 13 to March 1, 2015.

MacFadyen and his Dave MacFadyen-coached rink of third stone James Dalton, second stone Matthew MacDonald and lead Parker MacFadyen went through round-robin play a perfect 5-0 (won-lost) at the Curl P.E.I. Canada Games trials at the Charlottetown Curling Complex over the weekend.

Smith defeated the Leslie Noye rink from Alberton’s Western Community Curling Club 12-7 in a tiebreaker on Sunday morning to secure the second men’s position. Both teams finished round-robin play at 3-2.

Noye beat Smith 8-6 in their round-robin encounter on Saturday evening. The tiebreaker was required because Curl P.E.I. rules state that teams tied for a playoff position shall only be eliminated from the playoffs by playing a tiebreaker game.

Other members of the Smith rink are third stone Brooks Roche, second stone Dylan Lowery, lead Ryan Lowery and coaches Tammy Dewar and Kevin Smith.

MacFadyen beat Cameron Jenkins of Cornwall 11-8 and Devin Schut, also from Cornwall, 12-4 in action on Saturday. Smith beat Schut 8-2 in his other game Saturday. Jenkins and another Cornwall team, skipped by Donald DeWolfe, finished play at 2-3 while Schut went 0-5.

On the women’s side, MacKay and her Montague/Crapaud team of third stone Danielle Collings, second stone Alyssa Wright, lead Kaleigh Peters and coach A.J. Campbell finished first with a 5-1 record.

Moerike, third stone Ashley Gallant, second stone Annika Kelly, lead Tati Kelly and coach Kevin Morike completed the round robin in second place at 4-2.

In Saturday’s games, Moerike edged Megan Ching of Cornwall 8-7 in an extra end, and beat the Western Community Curling Club’s Karlie Lewis 16-5 while MacKay blanked Lewis 14-0 and beat Ching 9-6.

Sunday, MacKay outscored Moerike 10-6 and Ching trimmed Lewis 14-3.
