SUMMERSIDE – The finals are now set at the P.E.I. masters curling championships for curlers aged 60 and over here at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club.
Diane MacKay and John Holmes won their respective semifinals on Thursday morning to punch their tickets to the winner-take-all finals on Thursday at 2 p.m.
MacKay and her rink from the Cornwall Curling Club and Charlottetown Curling Complex overcame a 4-0 deficit after two ends to edge Norma Sonier of The Fox 6-5.
MacKay will take on the 2012 champion, Shirley Berry, in the women’s final while Holmes will meet the Ted MacFadyen rink in an all-Silver Fox men’s final.
Holmes doubled Brian Ellis of the Crapaud Community Curling Club 8-4 in the men’s semifinal. MacFadyen secured his berth in the final by defeating Holmes in the Page A-vs.-B game on Wednesday afternoon.
Winners and runners-up in both the men’s and the women’s divisions earn the right to compete in the Maritime masters championships at the Cornwall Curling Club from March 14 to 17. The winning teams, or the highest-finishing men’s and women’s rinks that choose to attend, are invited to participate in the 2014 ATB Financial Canadian masters championships in Coaldale Alta., from March 31 to April 6.
