Winner faces O’Rourke in Sunday’s final
CHARLOTTETOWN – It’ll be Shirley Berry taking on last year’s runner-up Kim Dolan in Saturday’s evening’s semifinal of the 2014 P.E.I. Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
The game will start at 7 p.m., and the winner will face 2010 Canadian silver-medallist Kathy O’Rourke in Sunday’s final at 2 p.m. to determine P.E.I.’s representative for the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Montreal from Feb. 1 to 9.
The P.E.I. women’s curling championship is being held at the Charlottetown Curling Complex.
Berry, a former P.E.I. senior champion, curls out of the Cornwall Curling Club and Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club. Meanwhile, Dolan, who has nine provincial women’s championships to her credit, and O’Rourke, a six-time winner, are from the host club.
O’Rourke clinched her berth in the final on Friday night, going through round-robin play with a perfect 4-0 (won-lost) record.
Berry, who was 2-1 in her first three games, clinched a semifinal berth on Friday night, leaving only one spot in the championship round to be decided in Saturday afternoon’s final round-robin draw. That game featured Dolan squaring off against Charlottetown clubmate Lisa Jackson.
Both teams went into the game with 1-2 records, and won 7-2 to advance to the semifinals.
Jackson opened the scoring with a deuce in the second end, but Dolan scored a single in the third, and stole the rest of the game – a single, a deuce and another single in the next three ends to lead 5-2 after six, and another deuce in eight to bring the game to an early end.
The other afternoon game had no impact on the playoffs, but gave defending-champion Suzanne Birt her only win in the event – 8-2 over Berry. Birt was leading 3-1 after four ends, when she pulled off a five-ender. Berry scored a single in the sixth end, but it was handshake time.
Following are the final round-robin standings:
Kathy O'Rourke 4 0
Kim Dolan 2 2
Shirley Berry 2 2
Lisa Jackson 1 3
Suzanne Birt 1 3
